Alan Vicary - Actor/Singer - Biography
Alan was born in Perth, Scotland.
He trained at The Royal Scottish Academy School of Drama (now the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland) 1981-84.
His first professional acting work was with Perth Repertory Theatre Company where he appeared in most productions from 1984-87 and also wrote and performed in many cabaret shows in the theatre bar.
In 1987-88 he appeared in two shows in London's West End - 'Me and My Girl' and 'Brigadoon' - and made his first television appearance in 'Taggart' for Scottish Television.
The next few years saw Alan much in demand as an actor and singer, working in theatres throughout Scotland and regularly appearing at the Edinburgh Festival - both the official and the fringe.
After appearing in 'The Phantom of the Opera' at The Playhouse Theatre, Edinburgh, in 1995 Alan successfully auditioned for the West End company of 'Les Miserables' and moved, with his wife and children, back to London.
Several other West End shows followed with Alan playing and understudying many leading roles.
Highlights include: Playing The Phantom in 'The Phantom of the Opera', Jean Valjean and Javert in 'Les Miserables', George Banks in 'Mary Poppins' and Enoch Snow in 'Carousel'. He was also delighted to work with Sir Trevor Nunn on the London production of 'Gone With The Wind' in 2008 and to make his National Theatre debut in 'The Power of Yes' by David Hare in 2009. In 2011 Alan appeared in the first of two tours of Goodnight Mister Tom by David Wood which went on to win an Olivier Award in 2013.
A return to Chichester Festival Theatre in 2013 saw Alan understudy legendary Holywood actor Frank Langella in Shakespeare's King Lear. The production also transferred to the Brooklyn Academy of Music for a limited run. In 2014 Alan made his debut at The Old Vic in Yael Farber's sell-out and critically acclaimed production of Aurther Millar's The Crucible.
In 2015 Alan returned to the West End as Mr Price in the British premiere of the multi-award winning Broadway musical Kinky Boots.
In Autumn 2018, Alan appeared at The Mercury Theatre, Colchester in Nick Perry's 'Moll Flanders' directed by Ryan McBryde, music by Paul Herbert.
In early 2019, Alan was delighted to return to The London production of Andrew Lloyd Webber's The Phantom of the Opera to play the role of M.Andre - a role which he had played on the National Tour and in the West End production eighteen years previously.
Following directly on from this, Alan appeared in The Girl from the North Country. Written and directed by Conor McPherson and featuring the music of Bob Dylan the show opened at The Royal Alexandra Theatre, Toronto and ran for nine weeks there before returning to London for a limited season at The Gielgud Theatre closing in early February 2020.
